Not just sitting in their laurels
Visual artists giving new life to old chairs—that was the bold proposal of the Maison de la culture du Plateau-Mont-Royal’s summer group exhibition Anagramme d’une chaise.
After 25 years of faithful service, the chairs were to be replaced, but rather than just get rid of them, the maison de la culture and its guest curator Louise Viger invited some of the artists whose work had been shown there during the last quarter century to call on their inspiration to alter the form of or even completely transform the handy object.
The results of this creative challenge were striking: 53 different works reflecting as many different views of the world, all with a simple chair as their starting point. The exhibition concluded with a benefit auction whose proceeds went to the artists.
