Fiddler on the… balcony?

Last spring, the Chasse-balcon band serenaded Montréalers – from their own front balconies!

Catherine Planet, musician and sociologist, had a simple yet brilliant plan: to play traditional folk music on the traditional balconies of Montréal. Once
a week, she and her fellow pickers gave surprise concerts in six different boroughs of the city. The music brought families, neighbours and passers-by together for dancing, singing and celebrating to old-time jigs and reels. After a long winter, this proved a wonderful way to warm up social ties among neighbours.

The impromptu shows were a real hit, and Planet’s band of street performers could hardly believe the rave response they got from the festive audiences. This sunny group has promised to perform again next spring, to bring Montrealers out of hibernation once again!
